National archives

Site of the national archives of the United Kingdom. The archives have one of the largest archival collections in the world, spanning 1,000 years of British history, from Domesday Book of 1086 to government papers recently released to the public.

The archives release most government documents on January 1, some 30 years after the latest date on the file. The annual release is called the New Year's Opening, and the site carries information on the openings.

A free monthly email newsletter is offered as a read to family, local and military historians or anyone interested in history or researching historical material for a novel perhaps.

A site search facility is available to assist in narrowing a search.

The collection may be seen at Kew, West London, or certain documents may be viewed online.
