=======================
The Penguin Book of 20th Century Speeches

.A general anthology of speech extracts which includes examples from the pulpit, from the British Houses of Parliament and from the scaffold.

They range from the Sermon on the Mount to JF Kennedy's "Ask not what your country can do for you..."; from the Gettysburg Address to Winston Churchill's war speeches, and from Adolf Hitler to Martin Luther.

Nearly all the important speeches are included, from Llyod George's 'Nation fit for heroes', to Churchill and Hitler orating at one another, to Moseley and Trotsky setting out their beliefs.

While the collection does not offer the full text of the speeches, the generality of the extracts gives a sense of their time and place and their importance when delivered.

Speechwriting in Perspective

speechwriting in Perspective A speechwriter writes for the words to be spoken aloud and the discipline requires different skills to those used in writing for the eye.

Speeches are better written in simple short sentences that can be easily understood by listeners.

The book recommends analysing audiences according to age; gender; culture; profession, income level; affiliation, and on the purpose of the speech.

Most effective speeches do not exceed 20 minutes in length. After researching a topic, speechwriters prepare an outline from which the speech will be developed.

The book offers guidance on striving to maintain a clear theme throughout the speech.

Most speeches have a three-part structure consisting of an introduction, a body and a conclusion.
