Introduction to family history
We look at the format for your finished history. Before we begin it is useful to decide if it will be a booklet for family members only or a full-scale book as a reference for future generations, or something else. It can be simple or elaborate, you decide.

What story?
Do you want to write mostly about a particular relative, an iconic figure, a branch of the family or the extended clan? As the author you choose a focus for your family history book.

Timeline
What period will you write about? You need to decide on a start period and a cut-off point. Once research starts it is quite easy to become fascinated by detail and lose sigth of the larger picture.

Writing Time
We look at setting a timetable for research and writing and production of the book, so that it may be finished in a timely manner. Deadlines serve to focus the mind on getting on with what's important in teh telling of your family history.

A Plan
Researching is fine but the time will come to put shape on the telling of the story. We look at the options available to you in laying out the story to best effect.

Getting started
A kick-off point should become apparent through research. It may be a turning point in a family fortune, a birth of a new generation, the end of an older line. We consider which would be best to begin your family history with.

Using official sources and reports
Census returns, official reports of all sorts throw up surprising information on a family and its background. Old diaries and even household bills can show what it was like for your family in its journey to the present day.

A family history is about people
We remind ourselves that a family history is the history of our family with real people facing real challenge, joy and tribulation; but most of all it's the real joy we get in the telling of the story.

Complete the eight-module course in the company of your own published tutor with hands-on experience to pass on to you.

Take your time to complete an assignment and then post it for constructive comment.

Once registered for the course of your choice you receive acknowledgement and your student ID.

Your tutor sends the first module to you and sets a short assignment for you to return.

When you complete the assignment and return it; your tutor returns it to you with comment and you receive the next module.

While you may proceed at your own pace; your tutor will suggest a timeline in which to file your work.

A new assignment is set for each student on each module.

On completion of all ten assignments, a certificate of participation is issued to qualifying students.
