Western Union Telegraph Company

The telegraph in the 19th century was all of the things the internet has become in the 21st century in the matter of rapid communication.

This website reflects the records of Western Union, America's best known telegraph company as held in the Jerome and Dorothy Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History

A listing of records begins with a concise history of the telegraph, including Samuel F.B. Morse's invention of the early telegraph, his Morse Code system of dots and dashes to signify letters of words.

The company's aggressive method of expansion is detailed as is early commercial telegraph services.
