The save the short story campaign was initiated in 2002 by the writer Margaret Wilkinson.
Its aims are to: increase the number and visibility of high quality outlets for short fiction; give the short story form more prestige and a higher profile; enable writers to specialise in the short story form and encourage and promote exciting short fiction.

The Scottish Arts Council and Arts Council England are co-funding a research project to establish the current state of the short story.
