Since 1982, the English Department at San Jose State University has sponsored the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, an annual literary competition to challenge entrants to compose the opening sentence to the worst of all possible novels. The contest is named by its originator, Professor Scott Rice, for the man who gave us the immortal opening line: "It was a dark and stormy night." Winning entries are posted on the site each year.
