Novel in a Year

woman hoopsNovelist Louise Doughty invited readers of the Telegraph newspaper to join her creative fiction class by writing the first lines of a novel.

She gave the first few words and each week of 52 the newspaper ran a feature article on what to do next. The now famous words were: "The day after my eighth birthday my father told me…"

A blog allowed readers to comment on the progress of the initiative.

Each week, Doughty discussed a different aspect of novel-writing and set readers exercises, the idea being that the material they wrote would build to form the basis of a book

While the year has ended; the columns and the accompanying blog remain on the Telegraph's site for all to use in a quest for publication.
