Twain's unmailed answer to a critic
Vexed writers can have a long memory as one 19th century critic discovered in the United States.
Mark Twain, in 1886, received
a letter from a former newspaper editor requesting a recommendation from
Twain.
But Twain remembered a negative newspaper review of one of his stage performances
that the man had written anonymously some sixteen years beforehand.
Unlike Twain who never mailed
this four-page letter the Missouri Review has posted Twain's initial response
on its website in a facsimile of the original.
Twain began:
This unmailed answer was drawn out by as civil and gentle a letter as ever civilian wrote to savage
