St. Patrick’s Day in the United States has a long history of being
celebrated with parades and general goodwill for all things Irish. The
day commemorates St. Patrick, whose feastday is March 17; the missionary
is credited with introducing Christianity to Ireland in the fifth century.
Irish is among the top-five ancestries in every state but two (Hawaii and New Mexico).
