Irish America

St. Patrick’s Day in the United States has a long history of being celebrated with parades and general goodwill for all things Irish.

This webpage is provided by the US Census Bureau as facts for features reference for writers seeking to write articles on the festival.

The day commemorates St. Patrick, whose feastday is March 17; the missionary is credited with introducing Christianity to Ireland in the fifth century.

March is chosen in the United States as Irish-American Heritage Month and was so proclaimed in 1995 by the US Congress.

The Irish are the leading ancestry group in the States of Delaware, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Irish is among the top-five ancestries in every state but two (Hawaii and New Mexico).
