Irish Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000
The
Dáil passed the Irish Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000 in
2000 after much debate with writers, copyright holders, publishers and
other stakeholders.
This link is to the entire act as passed in 2000. An amendment was passed
in 2004 to allow for public exhibition of copyrighted works without
infringing copyright.
The PDF document includes detail on; copyright; broadcasts; prosecution;
jurisdiction of courts; interpretation of authorship; works of joint
authorship; rights of the copyright owner and first ownership of copyright,
amongst other matters.
Irish copyright law exists since about 500 AD, when St Colmcille was
censured by the High King for secretly copying a book of the Gospels
belonging to St Finian. The judgement of High King Diarmaid Mac Cearrbheoil,
was: “Le gach bó a buinínm agus le gach leabhar
a chóip; To every cow her calf and to every book its copy.”
