The
site of the US Copyright Office offers comprehensive assistance and information
on copyright matters. Registration with the office is voluntary.
Copyright exists from the moment a work is created. But copyright owners
must register if they wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a US
work.
Included here are FAQ covering most matters of copyright. There is also
a facility to locate the copyright status of millions of books, music
recordings, movies and software.
Databases contain records of registrations and ownership documents since
1978.
The United States has copyright relations with most other countries and
each honours each other's citizens' copyrights.
However, the United States does not have copyright relationships with
every country and a listing of countries and the nature of their copyright
relations with the United States is available through the site.
