Patrick O'Brian

The adventure novels of Patrick O'Brian were often compared by critics to the work of Jane Austen and even Homer. O'Brian was author of the acclaimed Aubrey–Maturin tales.

He lived for many years in south west France, and died in Dublin in January 2000.

O'Brian evoked in detail an entire world — that of the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars.

His memorial site is maintained by his US publishers W.W.Norton & Company. The site includes relevant links to other sites and to the long list of films made from his books.

There is an active community of admirers affectionately known as the Gunroom who contribute to a discussion forum and to the Patrick O'Brian Reading Group.
