BookCrossing.com

Swopping books is not new but when the internet is added to the mix you have tales of books travelling across countries and frontiers whilst being tracked online by BookCrossing.com.

There are some 241,837 members with some 1,032,918 books registered on the system.

BookCrossing is a reading group that knows no geographical boundaries. Once read, a book is left anywhere by a member. BookCrossing works by members reading a good book; registering it, with comments; and releasing it with a unique BookCrossing ID number for someone else to read.

The member is notified by email each time somebody logs on and records journal entries for that book. If a member adds release notes on the book, others can search for it, wherever it was left.

Ron Hornbaker (above) created the community site for books and BookCrossing.com is maintained by Humankind Systems Inc.
