Authors' licensing and copywriting society

If you are a published author you may have some money coming to you that you don’t know about.

The Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society Limited (ALCS) is the UK rights management society for all writers and its principal business is to collect and distribute fees to writers whose works have been copied, broadcast or recorded.

But it can only pay over royalties to those who are registered with it and its website has a list of unregistered individuals in the fields of books; TV, and radio for whom it is holding royalties. The ALCS has either been unable to locate their details; or has written to them, to no response.

ALCS was set up in 1977 to help writers protect and exploit their collective rights. Since its foundation it has paid writers over £79 million in fees – fees they would not have been able to collect individually.

ALCS is wholly owned and controlled by writers.
