The Great Reporters
by David Randall

Some 13 great reporters are included in this volume.

Nine Americans and four Britons are profiled so it's not the 13 greatest reporters, else other nationalities could lay claim to inclusion.

Nonetheless Randall presents the baker's dozen with wit, insight and style.

It's a book for journos, hacks and media students alike to dip into and to wonder at the dedication and tenacity of the ten men and three women who in different times and in different places went after the truth and reported it, as it was.

Press Delete
by Ray Burke

The Irish Press was founded in 1931, and the links between it and the recently-formed Fianna Fail party were strong.

Fianna Fail was to be the dominant political party for much of the succeeding decades of the 20th century.

Raymond Burke here traces the influential role the paper had in moulding journalism in Ireland.

He examines the third generation management decisions which led to the closure of The Irish Press in May 1995.

The style is one of interested participant since Burke was news editor 1991-1995 and was news editor in RTE from 2000 when he wrote this account of the demise of a national paper.

Whether the reader knew the paper or the participants, the story is a fascinating one, and well told.

Under The Spotlight
Conversations with 18 Leading Irish Journalists
by Roger Greene

under the spotlight Radio interviews by Newstalk 106's Media Matters presenter Roger Greene are here gathered into a collection of profiles of leading figures from Irish media who reveal the personal and professional motivations behind their public personna.

Interviewees include Conor Brady, Fergal Keane, Lara Marlowe, Frank Connolly, Gene Kerrigan, John Waters, Joe Mulholland, Vincent Browne, and Eamon Dunphy.

Each reflects on the journey that brought them to their present position. And in doing so reflect the times they lived through and their part in it all.

The interviews are rendered as transcripts of the broadcast interview and include the author/interviewer's questions to the subject.

Such an approach may be of interest to prospective interviewers, but for the reader the other voice can tend to get in the way of the subject's discourse.

Nonetheless, the collection is of value both from an informal reading and for points to ponder in a writing career.
