The
Charles Dickens Museum and Dickens
2012 have announced two major events to take place on February 7 the
date on which Dickens was born, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of
that birth.
A wreathlaying ceremony will take place on February 7, 2012 at Poets'
Corner where Dickens was buried in 1870.
More
than 200 descendants of the novelist are invited and some will read from
their great-great-grandfather's work.
Meanwhile, the Charles Dickens Museum at 48 Doughty Street, Camden in
central London has defended its decision to close to the public, for a
revamp, during the 200th anniversary year of the author's birth.
Dicken's former home will close, on April 10, just ahead of the Olympic
Games in London when many other tourist attractions are expecting boosted
visitor numbers.
It happens that the museum has been awarded a Heritage Lottery grant of
£2m.
The museum's manager Shannon Hermes said the money was only available
for a limited time and they had to seize the opportunity to avail of it.
Many Dickens-related events are planned for elsewhere in London throughout
the year.
