Future
of UK PLR office in question
Public
consultation is to take place in the United Kingdom on the future of the
Public Lending Right system whereby authors are paid for the borrowing
of their books from public libraries.
Writers based in other EU countries benefit from borrowings of their work
in Britain.
The Public Bodies Act, which gives the British government powers to abolish
the PLR office and transfer the management of PLR to another public body,
became law on December 14, 2011.
Under the Act the next step in the process is for the government to undertake
a public consultation on the future management of PLR.
This is likely to get under way early in the New Year, according to the
PLR office.
Meanwhile, it remains business as usual at the PLR office as it prepares
for the next payment distribution to authors, in February 2012.
