Minister
gives more money to libraries
The
Minister for libraries has agreed an additional €2.5 million in grant
aid for libraries.
In addition to the €5.8 million funding provided for in the new Library
Capital Programme announced in July 2011, Phil Hogan T.D the Minister
for the Environment, Community and Local Government announced further
funding for six library projects in six library authorities.
Some €6.8 million will be invested by the local authorities on improvements
to the library services for which the minister is providing extra grant
aid.
Recently published outturns for public library expenditure in 2010 show
that notwithstanding access restrictions, usage, as indicated by the number
of registered members, number of visits by the public to libraries, items
borrowed and internet use showed a marked increase over the previous year.
In 2010, branches saw an increase in visits from 16.1 million to 16.3
million.
The number of public access Internet terminals in 2010 for public use
rose to 2,088.
