Pulitzer prize changes
A
change in eligibility rules for the Pulitzer Prizes will open the door
to more web-only publications.
In 2008, non-print newsrooms were allowed by the Pulitzer board to compete
for the first time in 14 journalism categories.
It was stipulated they must be primarily dedicated to original news reporting
and coverage of ongoing events. That restriction has now been lifted.
The revised rule will provide more flexibility as the board focuses on
the merit of an entry rather than where it appeared.
The new eligibility rules require only that the submitting news outlet
be a text-based United States newspaper or news site that publishes at
least weekly during the calendar year and that adheres to the highest
journalistic principles.
Original reporting and coverage of ongoing events will remain central
considerations in the prizes for reporting and writing.
Magazines and broadcast media, and their respective websites, are still
not eligible.
Closing date for entries is February 1,
2010.
