Johnston
wants online payment
Johnston
Press, Britain's biggest publisher of regional newspapers, is to begin
charging for the online content of some of its titles. The company has
extensive interests in Ireland.
Paywalls beyond which content viewers will be charged for sight of the
material are to be erected on six of its weekly newspaper websites from
November 30, as part of a trial to assess market impact of charging for
online content, according to Press Gazette reports.
However, the same reports said there are no immediate plans to charge
for web access on the flagship titles, the Scotsman and the Yorkshire
Post.
Four English newspapers will take part in the three month trial: the Worksop
Guardian, the Ripley & Heanor News, the Whitby Gazette
and the Northumberland Gazette.
They will be joined by Scottish weeklies, the Carrick Gazette
and the Southern Reporter.
Paywalls have not proven to be successful in the past for general news.
Readers have simply accessed the information elsewhere on the net when
faced with online restriction.
A severe downturn in advertising revenue is forcing publishers to seek
income from their online content.
