No advance for writers

A digital-only subsidiary of Harlequin Enterprises Ltd intends to publish its lists with no advance payable to the authors. Instead, authors will receive higher royalty rates, according to the new imprint Carina Press.

On offer will be 30 per cent of the original cover price on direct sales, 15 per cent of the original cover price on third party distribution.

Unlike Harlequin, there is no guaranteed series distribution --- no standing order, no direct mail, no overseas translation markets, according to Carina Press.

Titles will be sold direct to consumers through the Carina Press website, and through third party distribution on other websites.

Selling online-only means the imprint is not limited by print bookstore shelf space gives it greater flexibility in the type of editorial it can accept from authors, and offer to readers. Un-agented submissions will be accepted, said Carina.

The imprint will begin publishing in Spring 2010, focusing on romance and erotic romance.

Carina Press accepts all-rights submissions in all genres of commercial fiction.

Considered will be: shorter stories, genre novels of 50,000 to 100,000 words or longer, and complex narratives of more than 100,000 words. Carina Press will also acquire books previously released in print form, but for which the author has either retained digital rights or had digital rights revert to them.
