Twittering away

twitterMore than 60 percent of Twitter users stop using the micro-blogging service a month after joining, according to Nielsen Online research.

Users write messages to one another to a limit of 140 characters, which is about the length of two average-size sentences.

Marketeers are increasingly using the platform to attract attention to their offerings.
But, Twitter will not be able to sustain its rise without establishing a higher level of user loyalty, according to Nielsen.

Twitter's audience retention rate, or the percentage of a given month's users who come back the following month, is currently about 40 percent.

Facebook and MySpace have retention rates of some 70 per cent, according to Nielsen.
