Working
safely with children
In
modern times a writer earning some extra income through subsidiary activities
must take safety precautions both for himself and for his charges.
The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon has posted some guidelines
for sole practitioners on its website, in response to requests from the
arts sector.
The code of practice aims to provide support and guidance to artists working
with children and young people in a solo capacity as practitioners, facilitators
or tutors.
A code of practice is a voluntary code, said the Arts Council; it does
not have any formal legal status other than to provide guidance as to
what may constitute reasonable behaviour in certain instances.
However, according to the Arts Council, it does demonstrate that a practitioner
is committed to best practice and prepared to take all reasonable steps
to fulfil a duty of care to children, young people and others with whom
they work.
