Dracula
to attack Dublin
Dracula
will be seen all over Dublin throughout the month of April. His re-appearance
may cause terror and dismay amongst native and visitor alike.
The creation of Dublin writer Bram Stoker, the account of the vampire
Count Dracula’s life has been in print since 1897.
The novel is mainly composed of journal entries and letters written by
several narrators who also serve as the novel's main protagonists, a technique
copied to this day by modern writers and filmmakers.
The book has been chosen as the selection for One City, One Book 2009
in Stoker’s native city.
The celebration
will be launched by Lord Mayor, Éibhlin Byrne on April 1, in Dublin
Castle.
Stoker's great grandson, Noel Dobbs, will be the guest of honour.
Beginning on April Fool’s Day, Dublin will come alive with gothic
capers. Events planned range from re-enactments of Stoker's wedding to
candlelit readings with organ accompaniment in St Patrick's Cathedral
to street theatre in Temple Bar.
The Irish Film Institute will also a Dracula series to coincide with the
festival.
Other vampires may make appearances around the city; but we don't know
where. So, watch out... and wash your neck, you never know.
