New
books pile up
More
than 300 new titles were published every day in the UK in 2008.
There are now more than five million English-language books available
to readers in the Nielsen Book database which logs books published in
Ireland and the UK.
Add in another three million for other countries and the number rises
to eight million published titles.
This includes in-print, print-on-demand, ebooks and out-of-print titles.
Book production figures in Ireland increased in 2008 from 1,807 to 1,902
an increase of
5.3 per cent. The number of new books published in the UK last year was
120,947.
Nielsen Book runs the ISBN Agency, book data collection and aggregation,
transaction services and sales data collection from 8,500 retailers in
the UK and Ireland.
The BookScan sales monitoring service is the world’s largest continuous
retail monitoring service in the world. It covers nine countries including
the UK, Ireland, US and Australia.
