Fresh Kills wins

Fresh Kills by Bill Loehfelm is the winner of the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award.

Bad Things Happen by Harry Dolan and The Prospect of My Arrival by Dwight Okita also finished in the top three.

Loehfelm, who works as a bartender in New Orleans during the day and wrote Fresh Kills at night, won a $25,000 publishing contract with Penguin, which will publish the novel in late summer.

The Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award is an opportunity for emerging fiction writers to join a community of authors on Amazon.com, showcase their work, and compete for a chance to get published.

Of 5,000 initial entries, excerpts from more than 800 fiction entries were eligible for Amazon.com customers to read, rate, and review, beginning in January 2008.

Editors at Penguin Group (USA) reviewed the Top 100 semifinalists based on early customer reads and full manuscript reviews provided by Publishers' Weekly.

Submissions came from 18 countries, and more than 30,000 Amazon.com customers downloaded excerpts of the submitted novels.

The contest was free and open to unpublished authors in 20 countries for English-language manuscripts. Amazon accepted 5,000 entries.
