Bradt Travel-Writing Competition

man on journeyFirst prize in a travel article writing competition is a holiday for two to Kyrgyzstan. The winning story will also be published in The Independent on Sunday's The Compact Traveller section, and the author will earn a commission from the newspaper.

The competition is open to all writers, published or unpublished.

Maximum length is 800 words and the theme is 'The Heart of the City' and entries must contain a strong travel element.

A prize category specifically for unpublished writers is included.

The Independent on Sunday will publish the winning entry and offer a commission for a 1,200-word article based on the winner's prize holiday.

The prize in the unpublished writers' category is a place on a travel-writing course in Granada, Spain.

The competition is open to all writers aged more than 18 years old. Unpublished means never having been paid for any piece of writing which has appeared in print or on the internet.

One entry per person.

Emailed entries are not accepted.

Closing date for entries is May 16, 2008.
