Davy
Byrnes does it again
The
world’s richest prize for a single short story is on its way back.
Dublin-based The Stinging Fly said Davy Byrnes Irish Writing
Award will be awarded for the second time; but not until 2009.
The award is worth €25,000 and five runners-up will each receive
€1,000. American novelist and short story writer Richard Ford will
judge the competition.
The Davy Byrnes Irish Writing Award competition was previously held in
2004 as part of the Bloomsday centenary celebrations.
More
than 1,100 entries were received with Anne Enright eventually being declared
the winner for her short story Honey.
Enright won the 2008 Booker for her novel The Gathering.
Once more, the Davy Byrnes Irish Writing Award will be run in association
with the Irish Times.
Open to Irish citizens and to residents of the thirty-two counties, the
competition has no word count limit, but entries must be a previously
unpublished short story written in English.
A full set of rules and entry forms will be made available in advance
of the competition being open for entries on October 1, 2008 said the
organisers. A winner will be announced in June 2009.
