more Nestlé Prize
Nestlé
has ended its sponsorship of the Nestlé Children’s Book Prize
after 23 years of partnership between Nestlé and the reading charity
Booktrust.
Protests over the food company’s marketing practices received widespread
publicity this year when author Sean Taylor refused to accept his prize-money
because he disagreed with Nestlé's marketing practices.
An official announcement said that Nestlé had been “increasingly
moving its community support towards the company strategy of nutrition,
health and wellness,” while Booktrust said it had been “reviewing
the organisation's priorities and how prizes and awards fit its strategic
objectives.”
The Nestlé Children's Book Prize ran in the UK for 23 years, concluding
in 2008, said Nestlé.
“The Prize celebrated the very best in children's literature, and
over the years, around half a million school children were involved in
choosing the winning authors,” it said in a statement.
Nestlé's Children's Book Prize helped to launch the careers of
many of today's top children's writers, including JK Rowling and Lauren
Child, who each won the prize three times, according to Nestlé’s
statement.
