New
parliamentary group for writers
The first ever parliamentary All Party Writers Group is
to be formed at Westminister.
Announcing the new group at the Authors’ Licensing & Collecting
Society’s (ALCS) agm, Dr Ian Gibson MP said the aim of the group
is "to represent the interests of all writers; to safeguard their
intellectual property rights and ensure they receive a fair level of recognition
and reward for their contribution to the economy and society as a whole."
Inauguration of the group is a direct result of ALCS’s 30th Anniversary
copyright debate, ‘Fair Trade or Foul Play?’ in March 2007,”
said Gibson. “It is important that the voice of the writer be heard
by the widest possible audience, and in particular by my fellow politicians.”
Digitisation presents wonderful opportunities for writers and for the
businesses that enable their work to reach the public, he said.
“However, it is vital that all authors receive due recognition of
their rights, both legal and moral, and that they are able to be rewarded
for those rights. Without writers those businesses, and indeed much of
our creative industries, would lack the currency in which they deal.”
Dr Gibson will chair the group, and will be supported by the Rt Hon Denis
MacShane MP as vice chair, Ed Vaizey MP as secretary and Chris Bryant
MP as treasurer.
