threat to PLR payments following
ISBN changes
The Public Lending Rights agency in Britain has re-assured its clients
that its computer system will cope with forthcoming changes to the international
book numbering system ISBN.
The format of the ISBN is changing from a 10 digit number to a 13 digit
number from January 2007.
The PLR computer system has been adapted to deal with both 10 and 13 digit
versions of ISBN.
Registered writers can apply using either the 10 or 13 digit number.
All ISBNs will be displayed on confirmation prints and annual statements
as 13 digit numbers, said the agency.
Loans data from sample libraries can also be handled in either format
– so calculation of loans figures and payments will not be affected.
The new 13 digit ISBNs will be identical to the existing barcode number
on the back cover of books; but will be preceded by the prefix 978.
PLR or Public Lending Right is the system under which writers whose books
are borrowed from public libraries are paid some few pence per borrowing.
The cash is disbursed once a year to those writers who are registered
with the agency.
